Enrichment tip: Take your dog somewhere new!

When was the last time you took your dog somewhere new? Dogs like routine but they LOVE new experiences too.

Things to try:

  1. Get on to Google and search for a nearby park that you’ve never explored. Austin is not exactly lacking in the area of parks and trails!
  2. Walk her around downtown. It’s good to get her exposed to lots of people and different sounds.
  3. Visit a dog-friendly restaurant or cafe like Emerald City Press, Rudy’s or Hudson’s on the Bend. (for a comprehensive list visit Bring Fido)
  4. Go for a swim! In fact, why don’t you get in there with her? Go on …
  5. Get in the car and drive. Just driving around can be a fun experience for your dog who gets to enjoy a plethora of smells from your open window and, who knows, maybe a stop for ice cream? Just don’t leave her in the car without you because it can heat up fast, even with the windows down.
  6. Go shopping. Stores like Petsmart, Home Depot, Office Max at Lakeline and HalfPrice Books are all dog-friendly! (for a comprehensive list visit Romain Reign)

Don’t forget:

  • Water + portable bowl
  • Poop bags
  • Treats (if you need a sudden distraction)
  • A towel to wipe down any dirty paws

Exposing your dog to new sights, sounds and smells helps her to adapt to new people and situations more comfortably. Plus it stimulates her mind and makes her one happy camper!
